James Hardie — Strengths and Weaknesses
James Hardie fiber cement is the gold standard for siding in the Pacific Northwest — and for good reason.
Hardie strengths:
• Completely inorganic — cement, sand, and fiber. Nothing to rot, nothing to feed insects.
• Class A fire rating — the best possible. Won't combust.
• 30-year warranty on material
• ColorPlus factory finish — baked-on paint that lasts 15+ years (no field painting quality can match it)
• Brand recognition — buyers in Seattle know and trust James Hardie
• Dimensionally very stable — minimal expansion/contraction
Hardie weaknesses:
• Heavier than LP SmartSide — requires more care in handling and installation
• More expensive (15–25% premium over LP SmartSide)
• Requires more skilled installers — improper installation is a warranty concern
• Cut ends must be primed in field or moisture intrusion occurs
